Happy New Year

Some end of the year statistics for all of you: The total amount of data in the form of torrents the have been uploaded to the site:

Broken down by year:

Here are links to the quarterly and monthly breakdowns.

Of all the data that is seeded, what would it take to download and store it all?

Well lets start with storage.

To store around 6.6 PB of data, you need a lot of disks, lets go with big ones, you will need approximately 500 14TB harddrives. The cheapest 14TB harddrive on Amazon is 336 USD per drive. That will add up to 168.000 USD. This does not include raid for dataprotection or computers to hold 500 harddrives.

To use 500 harddrives you need a place to put them, lets say a few 45 or 60 disk JBOD chassis, that will cost around 15 USD/disk, and you will need 11 or 9 of them respectively. That's another 7.500 USD.
Now you still need a computer, preferably something with alot of PCI-e slots for the eSATA cards the jbod chassis connect to. This will cost another 1.200 USD.

Now that we have all the stuff we need to download and store the data, we need to power it aswell, and that's not going to be cheap, lets say all the computers and harddrives use 9.500W of power, and you pay 12 cents per kWH, thats going to cost you 835 USD/month or 10.000 USD/year just to keep the power on.

There are probably quite a few duplicate files that can be deduplicated using file level deduplication, but rather than buying less disks you are probably better off adding some sort of fault tolerance to your storage.

To download all this data you will need alot of time, or a big fat internet connection.

On a 100mbit connection it would take 19 years to download all contents currently being seeded.
If you are lucky and have a gigabit fiber home you can do it in just under 2 years.
If you can get your hands on a 10gigabit connection, you can get it down to a more manageable two and a half months.

And nether of this is including the average of 1.6 TB of daily uploads which in itself would require one new 14TB harddrive every eight and a half days and an internet connection that can download 25mbit constantly.

Anyone up to the challenge?

Well the nerd-factor of having all this would of cource be huge!

But this is where bittorent shines, as long as we all keep seeding, especially the rarer and older stuff, one or a few don't have to take all the cost, we all contribute a few cents or dollars per month, on internet connections we already have, and unused storage on our computers, and everyone worldwide can continue to enjoy the torrents for years and decades to come.

Happy new 2020 - Keep seeding for decades to come!

Yes it is, an interesting statistic @GRNS3 and @sotnikam we sail with it.
I made a big contribution in 2013 and 2014 as a Uploader I got the green skull.
I am still here with my seeding & I Still Seed,
with best wishes in 2020
